Plott Hounds - History
Plott Hounds are a true American breed. These dogs were bred by the Plott family and were named accordingly. As a matter of fact, it was common for the dogs bred by American families to acquire the name of their creators. A family with German roots bred the Plott hound. In 1750, the ancestors of the Plott family moved to the United States bringing a few dogs with them. Hanoverians, popular in Germany at that time, started to be bred in America.
Plott family members continued to breed the line of these dogs, which resulted in the production of a hardy hunter, capable of hunting the bear and the boar. Necessary outcrosses were made to the Plott hound in the 20th century. The dogs appeared to be of exceptional quality.
The spread of coonhunting raised demand for good hunting dog with treeing talents. The Plott Hound attracted breeders' attention immediately. The breed was quick and energetic. Impressive determination and aggressiveness during a hunt played a great part in popularization the breed. The Plott Hound started to be used in hunting the coon. Hence, the breed began to be referred to as the coonhound.
Despite brilliant physical and temperament characteristics of the breed, it is still rare. The Plotts family marketed these dogs a few times. The breed was recognized in 1946. However, Plott Hounds are not a common sight in areas other than southern ones.
