Plott Hounds - Breed Details
Plott Hounds are one of the six breeds known as coonhounds. Coonhounds are characterized by a strong hunting instinct and treeing abilities. The Plott Hound is still used to perform its original functions. Though bred for hunting the bear and other large game, the Plott Hound made a shift in hunting specifics. Nowadays, it is used in hunting both large game and the coon.
Plott Hounds as pets are a rare sight. These dogs have certain peculiarities that make the dog not suited for many households. The breed needs being involved in various activities. It needs much space to exercise and is better in a country. Hunting sessions is what unveils the Plott Hound's potential to its fullest.
It should be mentioned, though, that the breed has amiable personality. All Plott hound breeders and owners state that the breed is brave and determined. It is eager to please its owners and does not show aggressiveness outside a hunting area. These dogs are good with children and other canines.
Plott Hounds live for about 12-14 years. They do not need much veterinary care and grooming. This short-coated breed is OK with regular brushing and ear checks. Ear checks are highly recommended after hunting. Make sure the dog does not have any fleas and its feet are not wounded. Plott Hounds drool and slobber.
